User guide for a system Essay This computer quote model was built to the specific requirements of Drum Gurus. It helps the user make an accurate quote for a customer, taking into account many various functions such as calculating VAT and delivery, discounts and service charges. Once the chosen items and the customers details have been entered the model will automatically generate an accurate invoice within seconds. It also helps the user keep to a set budget. System Requirements: Although this system is very simple and easy to use there are some standard requirements for the model to run efficiently and smoothly. Hardware: Software: Minimum: 40GB Ultra ATA/100 7200RPM Hard Drive A colour printer would be also required to print off the invoices. Colour makes the invoice look a lot more professional and an ink jet printer will be just fine. You do not need to splash out on a fancy photocopying and scanning printer when you do not need it. Software: Microsoft Excel 2000 is required to run this model. Installing and using the program: How to install: The model will come on a CD labelled Drum Gurus Model. Open up your CD Drive and insert the disk. Close the drive and wait for the installing window to appear. If the window does not appear do the following: 1. Click start on the taskbar 2. Click on My computer (If it is not here it is usually found on the desktop) 3. Double click on your usually called D Drive which has an icon of a CD. 4. Once it opens you should see the Drums Guru Model. Once you have the following box appearing on your screen: Now all you have to do is double click on the Drum Gurus Model icon and the program will install itself into a new folder. It will automatically install subfolders for customers, folders for the parts names, prices and pictures. You should keep the CD just in case for backup reasons or you have to reinstall for any reason. To save you having to create all the folders we have already done it for you. During the installation the following folders will be created: à Completed Invoices. Customers à Parts à Completed Quotes à Others To create any more folders simple right click and press Create New Folder. Using the program: Now that the model has been successfully installed, double click on the icon to load the program. This screen should appear now: Once this screen appears you can choose which page you would like to go to. Usually the Interface is the first page you will need to see. To enter the just simply click on the button and it will take you there automatically. 1. Firstly enter the customers details 2. Secondly if applicable enter the customers budget. 3. Then one by one select each part from the separate drop down lists. As you select each item the price and total price will automatically be updated. Just click on any drop down menu and choose the selected kit. 4. Once each component has been selected; it then calculates a sub total. From this subtotal the VAT and Shipping charge are added. 5. Once this has all been calculated the final total highlighted in bold will appear giving you the final price. 6. It also works out if the customer is over or under budget. If the customer is over budget it will be indicated in red and the user can either change the certain items or just leave it if the budget is only over a small amount. Here it indicates that I am over budget by i 452. 03 so I should change a few items. Once the user is happy with the computer, then click the Invoice button as seen at the top right in the above screenshot. This is the invoice sheet and it shows all the items that have been chosen. It gives a subtotal, and then shows how much the Shipping and Handling is and the VAT. It then creates the grand total. The big difference here is that it cannot be changed, none of the items or prices can be changed to create a safer process. 7. Then to save the quote for that customer you click on file and then Save As.. This is what it should look like: Locate the folder called Quotes that was already created. Then type in the name of the customer or the unique code number given to every quote for reference. Or you could name it simple like putting his first and last name, however this may not be a good idea because there could be more than one John Smith. The quote can then be simply printed off by clicking file then print and it should fit all onto one page. Troubleshooting: Whilst you use the quote system, you should hopefully not encounter any problems as it all has been thoroughly tested. However there are some validation messages that could cause some confusion. They are designed to stop the user from making a simple mistake, the validation will do that, but the problem is that the user might not know how to correct the mistake which the validation box keeps indicating. This message will appear when a name is entered which is too long. The solution is simple and easy, all you have to do is press cancel type in a shorter name. This message will appear when a telephone number is entered incorrectly. The solution is quite straight forward, just make sure not to leave gaps and enter 020 849382372 keep it all together and only enter numbers no letters. The number entered for the budget may be a ridiculous amount and so try and keep it between à 0 and i 5,000. What this message means is that the user has tried to change a formula or a cell that they are not supposed to. You should not need to change any of the cells when this box appears when I tested so there should be no problems. Just click ok and carry on with the order. Advanced Options: Changing the brochure of parts: The prices of the drum parts and accessories are forever changing. This means that the brochure of parts will need to be changed often. Once the brochure of parts has been changed the drop down menus automatically get updated as well. This is how to add or change an item to the brochure. E. g. Say you wanted to get add an Sabian B8 30 ride and also change the price of the Sabian B8 20 ride. This is how you would do it. 1. First click on Data at the bottom of the model. 2. Then locate the Sabian B8 20 ride under the Cymbals Category 3. Enter the amount you would like to change for the price then press enter 4. Then go the bottom and type in the details for the new cymbals 5. To keep it in descending price order in this case you would highlight all of the cymbals and press on the Za button to sort descending. As you can see I have added the new cymbal however it is not in the right order. Now as you can see I have highlighted and now all I have to do is press the Sort Descending button and it will sort the prices out. However there will not be enough drop down menus. But it is easy to change. All you do is right click on the drop down menu on Cymbals and press format Control ou then change the number of drop down lines from 17 to 18. Now you click on input range, it will take you to the data and you highlight the whole of the Cymbals data and press enter and you are done with entering new items. Changing service, VAT, delivery: VAT: At present the VAT is 17. 5%. This is calculated by multiplying the subtotal but 0. 175. To change the VAT all you have to do is enter into the box the designated sum for the VAT. Where it says 0. 175 you just change it to 0. 20 for 20% or 0. 50 for 50%. Shipping and Handling: To change the service charge (Shipping and Handling) is just as simple. You click on the shipping and Handling and in the formula box at the top just change the ammount from 7. 00 to 8. 00. Like this.

A Technophobic Confession :: Personal Narrative Computers Papers
A Technophobic Confession I am a technophobe. There, I admitted it. The Unabomber, George Orwell, my hardheaded grandfather and I are all members of the same fraternity. I am in the closet no longer. Just because I don't blow up buildings doesn't mean I'm not afraid of the unrelenting onslaught of technology. I went to high school in a small town in rural Illinois, and until the age of sixteen, I was able to survive without touching a computer. In fact, the only one I remember seeing on a regular basis was the one in the corner of the public library. Up until my junior year in high school, that computer was just about the loneliest thing in the world. Most of the people in town used a computer for one of two things: word processing or playing video games, and anybody who really had any desire to do either of these owned a computer or had access to one at work. The librarian's daughter used to set books on top of that computer when she was sorting them out to be reshelved. I always thought of the computer as just that, an overglorified bookrack. I laughed to see a tall, precariously balanced pile of books on top of the monitor, which was all but hidden by its dust cover body bag. I laughed because I am a technophobe, and to see it being used in this manner reassured me that computers were, quite obviously, a waste of time and money. Then the e-mail epidemic began cropping up in cities across the nation, and it spread quickly. Like all innovations, it eventually made its way to the Middle West. The outbreak in my hometown started where I least expected it: in that eternally slumbering computer sitting underneath the stack of book returns. It happened overnight. The computer was wired to the Internet. The small weekly local paper pushed the Knights of Columbus hall off the front page to run a story about the Information Superhighway. Clouds brooded on the horizon and little children tossed uneasily in their sleep. I was good friends with the librarianââ¬â¢s daughter. We went to the same high school. She was in my circle of friends. We were juniors. She was the first to get an email address.

Death and Life â⬠Tuesdays with Morrie Essay
Nagel wrote: ââ¬Å"everybody dies, but not everybody agrees about what death is.â⬠In this chapter, Death, Nagel explains some of the beliefs people have about death. One of his points was survival after death. Nagel said that if dualism is true we can understand how life after death might be possible. Each person would consist of a soul and a body, and the soul would have to be able to leave the body and function on its own. If dualism is not true, then life after death could not exist because mental processes go in the brain which depend on the rest of the body. Nagel believes that life after death might be tangible if dualism is true. Nagel asserts that death, the most terrifying of things, is nothing to us. Since as long as we exist, death is not with us; but when death comes, then we do not exist. It does not then concern either the living or the dead. He explained that death can be considered a negative evil because when a person dies, their lives end. This means that there is nothing left; no love, work, food, clothing, cars or anything else. When Nagel says death has no value, positive or negative, he means to the person who has died. Oneââ¬â¢s death can clearly have value to others, negative to oneââ¬â¢s family and friends, positive to oneââ¬â¢s enemies or those who profit from it. Nagel also explained that anything that is bad for someone-must be bad for that person at a particular time. There is no time at which death is bad for the one who dies. Death is not bad for someone before he dies; it is not bad for her once he dies, because from that point on she no longer exists. Nagel makes a good point when he said: ââ¬Å"the fact that all good things in life come to an end is reason for regret.â⬠Some people want more to enjoy in their lives. Others are terrified of death, so they live in fear, not living life to the fullest. He said that it is scary to think that when a person dies, the world with go on without them and they will become nothing. PART 2 I watched the film Tuesdays with Morrie that is pertinent to Chapter 9, Death, in Nagelââ¬â¢s book. The movie could also relate to Chapter 10, The Meaning of Life. I read the book Tuesdays with Morrie long ago and I also recently watched the movie. Mitch Albom is the author of the book and one of the main characters in the movie. Mitch is a newspaper columnist who is dedicated to his work and himself. Mitch spent almost all of his time working which caused him to realize what was really important in his life. Since Mitch spent so much time working, his relationship with his girlfriend Janine suffered. Mitch came across his favorite college professor, Morrie, when he was watching a TV interview. Morrie was dying from Lou Gehrig disease. When Mitch seen this, he begins to feel guilty because he promised to keep in touch with Morrie after graduation, but never did. Now that Mitch knows that Morrie is sick and does not have that much time left, Mitch wants to see his beloved professor. Mitch went out to Massachusetts to visit Morrie which led to the two meeting regularly, every Tuesday. For being sick, Morrie was extremely optimistic. Morrie wanted to spend the last months of his life teaching the world about life through TV interviews. Mitch and Morrie talk about life, everything in it and death. Mitch and Morrie talk about Mitchââ¬â¢s brother, Peter, who has cancer. Peter does not want anyones help or sympathy because of his sickness. Mitch tries to call Peter and he does not want to talk to Mitch. Morrie tells Mitch that soon the two brothers will be able to talk about it. Mitch learns how to better himself through his Tuesdays with Morrie. Mitch learns that there is more to life then just work, how to relate with Janine and how to deal with grief and fear. Each Tuesday we notice Morrieââ¬â¢s health declining. At their last meeting, Morrie was bed ridden. As Mitch and Morrie hugged each other the last time, Morrie notices that Mitch is crying. After Morrie dies, Mitch tries having a conversation with Morrie, as he had wanted. Mitch feels a certain naturalness and comfort to this conversation and realizes that it happens to be Tuesday. After Morrieââ¬â¢s death, Mitch and his brother Peter begin to talk again. Morrie talks to Mitch about learning to accept death. One of the phrases that really stood out to me that Morrie said was ââ¬Å"once you learn how to die, you learn how to live.â⬠Morrie feels that people refuse to believe, or think, that they will die, which leads to not living life to the fullest extent. Most people put death in the back of their minds, thinking it will never happen to them. Like Morrie says we live life sleepwalking, never fully awake or aware which is how most people live their lives, like Mitch did. Morrie also talks about regrets; as people age and become closer to death, they start to regret more things. Like Nagel, Morrie knows that once we fully accept that we will someday die, we learn to live our lives the way we wish without any regrets. Morrie came to terms with the fact that he knew he was going to die, and he wanted to make the best of his life. Mitch seen that Morrie was very sick and began to regret that he broke his promise to stay in contact with Morrie. Although Mitch did feel guilty, he probably would not have even remembered his professor if he did not see the interview since Mitch was so caught up in himself and his work. If the circumstances were different, and Morrie was not dying, would Mitch still have went and seen Morrie or did Mitch feel rushed because Morrieââ¬â¢s time was running out? Mitch met with Morrie and seen the positive way that Morrie was living his last few months, even though Morrie knew he was dying. Mitch realizes that through Morrieââ¬â¢s death he has learned how to fully live his life. PART 3 I do believe that the information in Nagelââ¬â¢s book is much deeper then popular culture point of view. We all know that death is inevitable, and everyone has different opinions about it. Nagel states how a person handles death depends on their personal and/or religious beliefs. The grieving process is different for everyone; some may face the death with no problems and others sometimes never get over it. Nagel explained that people are often afraid of their own death. I thought that Nagel actually made me think about what death really is and means. Sometimes death can be hard to deal with but once we accept it, we can start living our lives the way we wish. For example, when a person with a terminal illness has a specific amount of time before their life will end, those people have the benefit of ââ¬Ëmaking things right.ââ¬â¢ This person can forgive those who have hurt them, say things that need to be said, spend time with loved ones or do things that they have always wanted to do, if possible. On the other hand, a person who dies suddenly does not have the opportunity to possibly right their wrongs. The person with a terminal illness has been given an advantage over the person who has a sudden death. In popular culture people view death as a grim, sad thing. Whenever we see death in the news, media or experience it ourselves, it is often considered to be tragic or a great loss. In popular culture, death is the one thing that everyone has in common. We always see celebrities in the news or media that have died. It seems as if the death of these noticed people are always big, like Whitney Houston or Michael Jackson. The death of my grandmother or grandfather would not make the news, though each death is truly a sad thing. Just as Nagel said, when someone dies the world does not stop, it keeps going. We still must learn how to cope and manage our sadness. Yes, death can be seen as a sad thing when you loose a loved one because you wish you could have more time with them. Maybe death is a sad thing because the deceased had suffered. Death can also be seen as a relief to the family of the person who had suffered, so they are no longer suffering. As Morrie and Nagel said, once a person accepts death is when we begin to live our lives the way we want to.
